Breast Reconstruction after Mastectomy Due to Breast Cancer

For many women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, mastectomy (removal of the breast) is, unfortunately, necessary for successful treatment of the cancer. While the mastectomy procedure removes both skin and tissue, reducing the volume of the breast, a reconstruction procedure recreates the size and shape of the breast for a natural appearance. Dr. Whitfield performs the majority of his breast reconstruction surgeries at his Milwaukee and Madison-area practice for breast cancer survivors who want to restore their sense of femininity and confidence after mastectomy. He thoroughly explains all available options and describes the breast reconstruction process so that you can decide if this procedure is the right choice for you.

DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Breast reconstruction surgery, in conjunction with reconstructive nipple surgery, can provide women who have had their breast surgically removed with a sense of strength, femininity, and contentment. Using the DIEP flap breast reconstruction technique, Milwaukee and Madison-area doctor Robert Whitfield can reconstruct your breast if you have undergone mastectomy so that the breast closely resembles its natural shape, size, and appearance. There are various breast reconstruction techniques that are used by cosmetic surgeons, but Dr. Whitfield chooses to employ the DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap method because he feels it offers patients the greatest benefits.

What is DIEP flap breast reconstruction?

During the DIEP flap breast reconstruction process, Dr. Whitfield separates skin and fat tissues from the abdominal area and microsurgically isolates and removes major blood vessels from the abdominal muscle tissue and transfers it to the pectoral area to reconstruct the breast. The muscle tissue of the abdomen and abdominal wall connective tissue is left intact. Once the skin, fat tissues, and blood vessels are removed, Dr. Whitfield carefully reattaches the vessels to the reconstruction site to create a blood source for the skin, and reconstructs the breast with the fat tissue. In more traditional methods of breast reconstruction, the muscle tissue that is attached to the vessels connecting the skin to the blood source also has to be removed. The DIEP flap technique is a less-invasive method of breast reconstruction. If you are considering breast reconstruction surgery in the Milwaukee and Madison area, Dr. Robert Whitfield can provide you with the resources you need to make an informed decision.
